009 An Older Tree

This is a second growth forest that is showing characteristics of its former primary status. In a primary forest there are generally six to 12 very large trees that are mature and near their natural end. There are about another 2,000 smaller ones all living on the same hectare. In sustainable forestry about 8 of the mature trees would be cut and the logging would not return for another 30 years allowing the smaller ones to replace the eight; a sustainable cycle.
