Each GREEN ENDOWMMENT MAHOGONY WALKING STICK symbolizes the Philippines as a nation that supports sustainable reforestation. 

Each of them represents a living tree since these walking sticks are made from small branches of living trees.  The production of these walking sticks helps the living forest to grow better and faster.

Each GREEN ENDOWMENT MAHOGONY WALKING STICK has the contributor’s name or designee’s name carved into the stick just below the handle.  Also, the amount of carbon sequestered inside the stick is carved underneath the name.

Using the Walking Stick is a way of showing that the Philippines is doing its part to help mitigate climate change.  This is a symbol that every Filipino, whether living at home or abroad, and friends of the Philippines, can walk proudly showing others that the Philippines is serious about Global Warming.

OFW Green Endowment Mortgage, College and Supplemental Retirement Funds

Dear Overseas Filipino Worker,

The Foundation is asking for your response, no money, just response.  If you like what we are saying please simply choose to follow this article and watch how the program develops.

The Foundation (Ilin Value Added Forestry Management Services Foundation, Inc. - IVAFMS) is growing trees in the Philippines.  It has developed a system to use the trees to provide a sustainable income while sustaining the forest and even expanding.

From the sustainable income IVAFMS will grow a small number of trees for an OFW for about US$26.46 per month for five years.  

In return the IVAFMS

• pays for 75% of a 500,000 peso 25-year mortgage, plus provides for 
• four years of college tuition starting in the 15th year at 65,430 pesos per year and 
• provides a supplemental retirement plan in the 25th year of 5,716 pesos per month for 10 years; a prospective future 
• value of Php1.1+million.

The IVAFMS is in the formation stages of this plan with various government agencies and is not offering this plan at the present time.

Photo-Ops are Nice, but Trees are for the Future

Of course it is great to have a project of planting a hundred or two hundred trees along a stretch of road or highway somewhere.   The ceremony is nice as well along with the photograph's memorializing the event.  We see this so many times and even participate.  Unfortunately the Photo-Op is the center piece rather than the tree's survival and long-term benefit to Mother Earth and mankind.

The planting of a tree is the beginning and the gesture.  Keeping the tree nurtured and protected is all the difference in the world of making the future become very pleasant when it finally becomes the present time.

  Mhey DeClito was only six years old when her parents planted this Mahogany tree 15 years before.

This beautiful tree holds thousands of gallons of water during the dry season and shares it with the soil. In the rainy season it holds it and helps prevent flooding.  Its semi-legume qualities allow for it to release nitrogen into the soil.  It consumes tons of carbon dioxide from both the air and the soil and releases tons of oxygen into the air.  Its lateral roots hold the fallen leaves which protect the soil from excessive rainfall, thus preventing erosion.  Its branches and leaves provide a habitat for beneficial insects and birds. It buffers the high winds during storms and protects the shorter trees and countless other benefits come from this living wonder of nature.

It is time to thin 1% to 2% of them so that the others will grow better and the shade that is removed will permit sunlight to reach the ground where one fruit tree can be planted for each five Mahogany trees that are harvested.

    1% of 1,000 trees = 10 trees     

    350 usable board feet x 10 trees = 3,500 BF    

    350 x 123.75 = 43,312.50 Php

    x 10 trees = 433,125 Php

The national norm for Mahogany tree growth is 3 cm per year

Our average is more than double or more than 6cm per year

x 15 years additional growth = is more than another 350 BF or nearly 800 usable BF.

This time around the harvest only needs to be .70% to produce 5,600 usable BF.

The value per BF increases by 25%

800 x 154.69 = 123,752 

x 7 = 866,264 Php (US$19,250)

Envision Value-Add

+56.25 Php x 800 x 7 = 315,000 Php (US$7,000)

Envision Value-Add to Retail Internet Sales

+270 Php x 800 x 7 = 1,512,000 Php (US$33,600)

Total Annual Sustainable Income from Sensible, Wise and Efficient Tree Management: 

2,693,264 Php (US$59,850)

How About the 30 Fruit Trees we now have?

2,000 Php per tree in profit per year x 30 = 60,000 Php (1,333.33)

This is the simplistic view using only 1,000 trees to begin with.  The normal footprint starts with 10,000 Mahogany trees on one hectare and within 30 years the profile of the hectare resembles a total of 1,600 fruit trees (producers) and 200 to 400 Mahogany trees.

As you can see by planning for the future there is substantial income produced along the way and in the end your grandchildren have a sustainable First World income of around 4 million pesos annually, indefinitely for each succeeding generation of your family with your vision having produced this legacy.
