Whatever your cause? Wherever?
If it is in the Third World, IVAFMS Foundation can develop a locally based economy that will eradicate poverty, bring healthy diets, natural medicines and food supplements; schools, infrastructure and renewed hope for those at the grassroots while easing social tension.
The following outline details the elements of why, how and the benefits of creating agroforestry at the grassroots level in your country. This example is built for the Philippines. In whatever country your project is located or you want it to be located IVAFMS can tailor make agroforestry to be successful there. This outline is specifically for the Philippines and is aimed at reforesting 7% of the total landmass and eradicating poverty. Other benefits, such as mitigating climate change and creating a tremendous GNP are addressed.
To be beneficial
agroforestry must exist.
The following process is
for every barangay, regardless of its existing forest status.
To build agroforestry
requires a break from tradition.
o We are sensitive to the
existing norms.
o Our project starts are
each minuscule.
§ 45 m2 for each
nursery
o We utilize existing
resources
§ Hardwood seeds from
mature trees within the barangay
§ Marcotting[1]
of Producers[2]
from within the barangay
· Farmers must want it.
o We select volunteers.
o We teach and demonstrate
openly, permitting onlookers.
· It is implemented at the
grassroots level.
o Each minuscule nursery is
located at or near the barangay hall.
o The project is visible to
all and pride of community ownership is fostered.
· What are the benefits to
be expected?
o 3,000 hardwood (Mahogany)
seeds will
§ begin germination
§ within six months 2,500
sprouts will become seedlings
§ At month 18 1,500
seedlings will be ready for planting
§ At month 36 1,000
saplings will be growing on the .30 hectare
o 300 Marcottings will
begin on existing trees and will
§ begin to develop roots
while still on the parent tree
§ at month 12+/- the
marcottings will be potted in the nursery
§ At month 24 the
mar cuttings will be planted on the .30 hectare
§ At month 36 100 Producers
will be growing on the .30 hectare
o Each year, starting at
the first 18-month mark, planting will commence.
§ .30 hectares
·
1,500 hardwood trees (1,000 will become saplings)
·
150 Producers (100 will become productive)
Agroforestry is necessary in each barangay regardless of its current forest status.
o Preservation of existing
forests
§ Slash and burning is the
primary threat to existing forests.
·
The motive is to use fertile soil from the forest.
·
The fertile soil only lasts for three years.
§ Solutions require
sustainability and wholesomeness at a savings
·
Organic farming adds soil reconditioning and crop value
·
Pro-biotic soil conditioning adds soil longevity and cuts
costs
·
Bio-diversified farming adds harvests throughout the year
o
This lowers the risk from calamity losses
·
Agroforestry adds sustainability and capacity building
Rebuilding the old and creating the new forests uses agroforestry
o Deforested and barren land
§ Lacks soil quality
§ Ultraviolet bombardment may extend back more than 50 years.
§ Soil rehabilitation is required
· Plant high density mahogany
· Grow three to six years and commence thinning
· Moisture barriers generate
· Soil microbes return, insects return, birds return, soil condition returns
·
Add Producers to the forest, transforming to sustainable
income
§ The Minuscule Project
will reforest 1% or 290,000 hectares within 26 years, however revenue will
commence before 36 months.
Poverty
Eradication
o Copy cat syndrome
§ Filipinos love to copy
successful businesses and projects
§ The “minuscule” project
invites community participation
§ It assists any and all
who desire to replicate on their own barren land
·
Nearly all farmers have barren land, usually 1/3rd
of their holdings of 3 hectares or 1 hectare is barren.
§ Six percent of the barangay
population will copy cat the project
§ The time line will surpass
that of the Minuscule project.
o Personal income to the
farmer using agroforestry on one hectare, 26th year
§ Approximately 1,000
producers
·
Approximately Php1,000 per producer per year
·
Php1,000,000 added to annual income
§ Approximately 1,000
hardwood
·
10% harvest or 100
·
Value-add, semi-finished quality hardwood goods
·
Php3,137,200 added to annual income, sustainable
§ Farmer-family annual
income in USD89,000.00 (First World)
o Agroforestry Community
Development
§ Production, Processing
and Marketing of new capacities
§ Community revenues,
employment, skills training
§ Individual
entrepreneurial development eradicating poverty
· Reduction in the rate of
increase of Global Warming
o The carbon sink will
increase dramatically
o The addition of Biochar
to the soil, created from the project
§ Biochar is the most
significant GGE reduction process known.
§ 2,030,000 million
hectares reforested
§ 4+ billion trees,
sustainable
· Cost/Benefit
o Cost
§ USD3,000 per barangay
first 3 years, subsequent years self-sustaining
§ Nationwide: USD126,000,000.00
§ USD1,465 per Chapter or
USD488.37 per year per chapter for 3 years.
o Benefit
§ Achieves Climate Change
goals and objectives of the entire Rotary
§ Eradicates Poverty in
Third World country
§ Creates sustainable
industries that are environmentally friendly
§ Adds ½ billion USD
directly to the grassroots agroforesters
§ Adds more than 2 trillion
USD to the GNP
§ The growth of the trees
is counter inflationary
· To preserve an existing
forest
o The methodology is the
same, however faster
o The soil is generally
quicker to rehabilitate
o Agroforestry in already
slash and burn areas
§ utilizes the areas
indefinitely
§ removes the need to
continue slash and burn practices
o Second growth forests
become
§ Managed and sustainable
harvests permitted for the benefit of the agroforestry community
· To build a new forest
o Seven years to
rehabilitate the soil
o Seven years to convert to producers
o Seven years to mature the
agroforest
· Why the Philippines?
o The Philippines has the infrastructure
to implement to the barangay level
o The grassroots desire the
program
o The level of acceptance
is high
o One decade of forestry
and social experimenting is complete
o The League of Municipal
Planners and Development Coordinators have already adopted the Agroforestry
planning
o Initial inquiries at the
ADB have welcomed the concept for the Philippines
o Success may be rapidly
realized
o Thereafter, success may be replicated in all tropical regions of the world.
Please admit it, these indigenous people are not the stereotype. Why? because they earn, however they retain their cultural values.
